The government has unveiled plans to modernize and expand Jomo Kenyatta International Airport through a project expected to cost more than KSh100 billion.
According to government officials, the project will be financed through borrowing and is aimed at increasing the airport’s capacity to handle the growing number of passengers and cargo passing through Kenya each year.
Officials said the expansion will include improvements to airport terminals, runways, security systems, and other supporting infrastructure. The modernization is expected to improve efficiency, reduce congestion, and enhance the overall travel experience for both local and international travelers.
Speaking on the project, government officials noted that JKIA remains a critical gateway to East Africa. “The expansion will strengthen Kenya’s position as a regional aviation hub and support economic growth through increased tourism, trade, and investment,” officials said.
Research shows that JKIA is the busiest airport in East Africa, handling millions of passengers annually and serving as a major cargo center for the region. The airport is also an important link for exports such as fresh flowers, fruits, and vegetables destined for international markets.
Aviation experts say improved airport infrastructure can attract more airlines and increase connectivity between Kenya and global destinations. “Modern airports play a key role in supporting economic development and creating employment opportunities,” said an aviation analyst.
The government has assured Kenyans that the borrowing plan will be carefully managed to ensure value for money and minimize pressure on public finances.
Once completed, the upgraded JKIA is expected to accommodate higher passenger volumes and further strengthen Kenya’s role in regional and international aviation.
