China Square’s Eldoret Launch Brings Hope for Lower Household Costs

For many Eldoret residents, the opening of China Square at Rupa’s Mall on Monday marked more than the arrival of another retail store—it signaled the possibility of stretching household budgets further amid the rising cost of living.

Hundreds of shoppers flocked to the new outlet as it officially opened its doors at Eldoret Depot along the Eldoret–Nakuru Highway. The ceremony was presided over by Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim, who described the investment as another milestone in positioning Eldoret as a regional business hub.

As China Square’s first branch in the North Rift, the store brings thousands of household and lifestyle products closer to consumers who previously travelled to Nairobi or relied on local retailers for similar items. The shelves are stocked with kitchenware, home décor, furniture, hardware, beauty products, toys, luggage, camping equipment and other everyday essentials.

For many families, the biggest attraction is affordability.

Products that were once considered costly or only available in Nairobi’s wholesale markets can now be purchased locally. Shoppers who attended the launch expressed excitement at finding household items, curtains, cookware and children’s toys at prices they described as significantly lower than what they were used to paying.

China Square’s business model, which relies on direct factory sourcing and bulk imports, enables the retailer to offer products at competitive prices by reducing intermediary costs. At a time when many households are grappling with high living expenses, residents hope the increased competition will help keep prices affordable.

Beyond savings for consumers, the new outlet is expected to boost employment in the region. More than 100 young people have secured direct jobs as cashiers, attendants, customer service personnel and storekeepers, while additional opportunities are expected for cleaners, security providers, transport operators and other service providers.

Speaking during the launch, Governor Jonathan Bii said the investment reflects growing confidence in Uasin Gishu County’s economy.

“Today’s opening of China Square in Eldoret City marks another significant milestone in our journey to position Eldoret as the preferred destination for investment, trade and enterprise. This landmark investment is a strong vote of confidence in our county’s growing economy,” he said.

The governor added that the county government will continue improving infrastructure and maintaining investor-friendly policies to attract more businesses while supporting local enterprise.

Although the arrival of the retail giant is expected to intensify competition for small traders selling similar products, consumers are likely to be among the biggest beneficiaries through wider product choices, improved shopping convenience and more competitive prices.

With shoppers expected from neighbouring counties including Nandi, Trans Nzoia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Kakamega and West Pokot, the new outlet is also expected to strengthen Eldoret’s position as the commercial centre of the North Rift while offering residents greater access to affordable household goods.
