Former Uasin Gishu nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA) Sarah Abdi Aidid has declared her bid for the Kapsaos Ward seat in Turbo Sub-County, promising to champion youth and women empowerment, economic transformation, innovation, technology and transparent governance if elected in the 2027 General Election.
Aidid says her decision to seek an elective mandate is driven by her desire to build on community initiatives she began during her tenure as a nominated MCA, before her nomination was nullified by the courts.
She said her administration will prioritize programmes that create sustainable economic opportunities for young people and women while expanding support for vulnerable members of society, including widows and orphans.
“My leadership will be people-centred. I want to empower our youth with skills and employment opportunities, support women through economic empowerment programmes and ensure vulnerable families receive the support they need to live dignified lives,” she said.
She also pledged to champion innovation and technology as drivers of economic growth, saying digital skills and entrepreneurship will be critical in unlocking opportunities for young people in the rapidly changing economy.
Aidid further promised to promote transparency, accountability and public participation in county governance, arguing that residents deserve leadership that is responsive, inclusive and focused on service delivery.
Building on Previous Community Programmes
Before losing her nomination to the County Assembly, Aidid had initiated and supported a number of community programmes targeting widows, orphans and young people across Uasin Gishu County.
Through partnerships with community groups and well-wishers, she organized empowerment forums, mentorship programmes and relief initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods among vulnerable families.
She says those programmes were interrupted after the court nullified her nomination but insists they demonstrated her commitment to community service beyond politics.
“If entrusted with the mandate by the people of Kapsaos, I intend to strengthen and expand these programmes so that more widows can access economic opportunities, more orphans receive educational support, and more young people are empowered through skills development and entrepreneurship,” she said.
A Political Comeback
Aidid’s declaration marks a significant political comeback after serving as a nominated MCA representing the Somali community in the Uasin Gishu County Assembly.
In September 2022, the Somali community celebrated her nomination, describing it as a milestone in enhancing the community’s representation in county leadership.
However, her tenure was cut short after she was among 11 United Democratic Alliance (UDA) nominated MCAs whose appointments were nullified following a successful legal challenge.
The petitioners, representing marginalized groups and persons with disabilities, argued that the party and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had bypassed the original gazetted party list in favour of another list that had not been lawfully approved.
Both the Magistrates’ Court and the High Court agreed, ruling that the nomination process did not comply with constitutional and legal requirements governing party-list nominations, leading to the removal of the affected MCAs from office.
Despite the setback, Aidid has remained active in community engagement and social empowerment initiatives while preparing for a return to elective politics.
A Changing Kapsaos Ward
Aidid joins the Kapsaos Ward race at a time when the area is undergoing rapid demographic and economic transformation.
Located in Turbo Sub-County, Kapsaos has experienced significant population growth over recent years, including an increase in the Somali community, whose members have become active participants in trade, transport, real estate and small-scale enterprises.
Political observers note that the ward’s changing demographics are likely to shape future electoral contests, placing greater emphasis on issue-based politics, inclusive leadership and development-oriented campaigns.
Aidid says her campaign will focus on uniting residents across all communities.
“My vision is to serve every resident of Kapsaos without discrimination. Development should not be determined by ethnicity, religion or political affiliation. Together, we can build a ward where every young person has an opportunity, every woman is economically empowered and every vulnerable family has hope,” she said.
As political activity gradually gathers momentum ahead of the 2027 General Election, Aidid believes her previous legislative experience and grassroots engagement have prepared her to offer effective leadership.
Her campaign is expected to focus on job creation, youth empowerment, women’s economic inclusion, innovation, technology, improved service delivery and good governance—issues that continue to resonate with many residents of Kapsaos Ward.
Seeking her first elective seat, Aidid says she hopes to earn the trust of voters by presenting a leadership agenda grounded in inclusivity, accountability and sustainable community development.
