Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has officially announced his bid for the presidency in 2027, but says he is willing to step aside for a consensus opposition candidate who will be fronted to challenge President William Ruto.
Nyoro, who recently cut ties with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and took over the leadership of the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK), made the declaration on Tuesday during a public engagement tour in the Mukuyu area of Murang’a.
Addressing residents, Nyoro said he is ready to offer his leadership to the country, citing his development record in Kiharu, but insisted that unity of the opposition is more important than individual ambition.
“If mothers who desire better leadership for this country look at this young man from Kiharu and say he has delivered and even made education almost free in his constituency, would that be wrong?” he asked the crowd, which responded with cheers.
The second-term legislator said he will table his ideas before the opposition and work closely with other leaders including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, former Attorney General Justin Muturi and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
“God has blessed each of us with different leadership gifts. I will bring my ideas to the table and we will work together — with Muturi, Gachagua, Matiang’i, Kalonzo, Sifuna — all of us as one team,” Nyoro said.
He called for mutual respect among opposition leaders, inviting them to his rallies to address his supporters and asking for the same opportunity when he attends theirs. According to him, open engagement will help build confidence and eliminate the factional politics that has derailed previous opposition unity efforts.
Nyoro proposed that the opposition should agree on one presidential flag bearer by August 2027 to prevent a split of votes and to enhance their chances of defeating President Ruto.
“I am pleading with all of us in the opposition that by August next year, we should have one candidate. We should not have small factions everywhere. Let us sit together and pick one person to vie for the presidency,” he said.
The Kiharu MP emphasized that leaders must be ready to sacrifice their personal interests for the collective good, noting that a united opposition would secure a bigger victory margin against Kenya Kwanza.
He disclosed that he will use PPK as a platform to traverse the country, including regions where he previously campaigned for President Ruto in 2022, to mobilize support for the opposition.
“We will go to Wajir, Mombasa and other parts of the country. Kwenye kwote tulienda kupeleka wheelbarrow, tutarudi kuzitoa rangi na kung’oa miguu,” he remarked, signaling his intention to dismantle UDA’s influence in areas he once helped build.
Nyoro, once a staunch ally of President Ruto and former Chairman of the powerful Budget and Appropriations Committee in Parliament before his removal in 2024 following a fallout, is now positioning himself as a key figure in the opposition’s strategy to unseat Ruto in the next polls.
