By Ruth Sang
The death of former Kirinyaga Senator Daniel Karaba was announced by Governor Anne Waiguru on Monday. In her statement, Governor Waiguru described Karaba as a “distinguished son of Kirinyaga whose life was marked by service, humility, and a strong dedication to education and leadership.”
Karaba built a notable career in education before he started his political career. He began his career as a teacher before achieving the status of school principal while also becoming a respected education leader. Governor Waiguru stated that “Mwalimu Karaba built a remarkable career as a teacher, principal, and education leader before serving as a two-term Member of Parliament for Kirinyaga Central and later as Senator.”
Karaba retired from his teaching role at Highway Secondary School in 2002 and the following year was elected as the Member of Parliament for Kirinyaga Central in 2003. He served in that capacity until 2013, when he became the first Senator of Kirinyaga County. The following year he won the senatorial seat but lost it to Charles Kibiru during the 2017 general elections.
Karaba’s passing marks the end of a distinguished career which he spent dedicated to both education and politics while making a positive difference in his community and throughout the county.
