The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has initiated an inquiry into the case of former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju who has vanished without a trace. Tuju was reported missing on Saturday, prompting his family to file an official missing person report at Karen Police Station on Sunday, March 22.

Tuju disappeared according to his family when he was traveling to a scheduled radio interview with his driver. The couple’s vehicle became a public affair after they discovered it abandoned on Miotoni Lane in the Karen area with its hazard lights still flashing. A security guard from a nearby institution reportedly noticed the suspiciously parked vehicle and alerted authorities, leading to a rapid response from officers stationed at Karen Police Station.

The serious and active investigation of the matter has been confirmed by DCI investigators. The police department required Tuju’s family members to assist with the investigation by allowing investigators to access all potential evidence that could expedite the resolution process. The family members at Tuju’s Mwitu Drive residence in Karen turned away investigators who sought entry to the residence on Sunday according to the agency which reported that this situation would impede their investigation progress.

The DCI required all participating groups to maintain complete transparency while they worked together on the investigation according to their Sunday evening statement. Authorities are also calling upon members of the public to come forward with any information that could assist in tracing Tuju’s movements or identifying any unusual activity. Detectives are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have seen Tuju, his driver, or their vehicle in the Miotoni Lane area or the wider Karen vicinity before, during, or after March 21, 2026.

Tuju faced legal problems at the time of his disappearance because there was a dispute about who owned Dari Business Park which is situated in Karen. The case revolves around allegations of defaulting on a loan amounting to Ksh 1.9 billion, borrowed from the East African Development Bank in 2015. Records show that the first loan amount reached USD 9,197,084 (approximately Ksh 1.2 billion) and the remaining amount stemmed from interest charges that accumulated over the duration of the loan.

The disputed properties which are part of the conflict include valuable real estate assets such as Entim Sidai Wellness Sanctuary, Tamarind Karen, and the Dari Business Park itself. Tuju wrote to Inspector General Douglas Kanja on March 19 to express his concern that police officers had illegally entered Dari Business Park which he operated.

Tuju alleged in the letter that over 100 police officers had invaded the property in the early hours of March 13 without a court order and had maintained their presence there for almost a week. The investigation of his sudden vanishing situation became more complex due to these claims which added new elements to an already difficult case.
