Police officers in Uasin Gishu County now say the Eldoret Wholesale Market was closed due to insecurity around the area.
The county government of Uasin Gishu closed the market in November 2022, following a clash between enforcement officers and traders.
Over three months later, the market remains closed.
But according to the Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Moses Mureithi, the county is currently working on renovating the market so that it has a good business environment for the traders.
“We are working in hand with the county government to make sure we give adequate security to traders because we take this issue as security agenda,” Mureithi said.

The county security boss further noted that they are cooperating with the county government to make sure they set up mechanisms that will ensure there is no repeat of a clash with traders that has been common for the last few years.
“We are coming up with a robust strategy to ensure everyone who depended on the market is catered for,” noted the county police commander.
He also asked residents to cooperate with security officers to make sure that everyone involved in insecurity cases faces the law.
The closed Eldoret wholesale market had more than 3,000 traders that were operating. However, the market only has about 1,000 stalls.
During the Christmas Day thanksgiving ceremony, President William Ruto announced that the national government would partner with the county to build a bigger market.
This is after Governor Jonathan Bii requested help in addressing the fight over the small market.
