France moved one step closer to a third FIFA World Cup title after defeating Morocco 2-0 in a disciplined quarter-final performance that underlined their championship credentials. Kylian Mbappé recovered from an early setback to score one goal and create another as Didier Deschamps’ side secured a place in the semi-finals for a third straight World Cup.
Morocco, the reigning African champions, frustrated France for much of the opening half with an organized defensive display. However, the French attack eventually found its breakthrough after the interval, with Mbappé once again proving to be the difference in a match that tested both sides’ tactical discipline.
The contest nearly took an early turn in France’s favour when the referee awarded a penalty after Mbappé was brought down by Noussair Mazraoui during a rapid counterattack. A lengthy Video Assistant Referee review delayed the restart for several minutes before Mbappé stepped up from the spot.
The French captain failed to convert, with Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou producing a comfortable save to keep the score level. It was a rare mistake from a player who has been one of the tournament’s standout performers.
France continued to dominate possession after the restart, gradually stretching Morocco’s defensive shape through quick passing and intelligent movement across the attacking third.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 60th minute. Mbappé received the ball inside the penalty area, shifted it onto his right foot and curled a precise finish beyond Bounou to hand France a deserved lead.
Six minutes later, France struck again to put the match beyond Morocco’s reach.
Mbappé’s clever movement drew several defenders away from the danger area, creating space for Ousmane Dembélé to collect the ball and drive a low finish into the bottom corner. The second goal reflected France’s attacking quality and clinical finishing, qualities that have made them one of the most feared teams at the tournament.
Morocco attempted to mount a response but struggled to create clear opportunities against a well-drilled French defence led by William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano. The Atlas Lions registered their first shot on target only in the closing stages, forcing goalkeeper Mike Maignan into his first significant save of the evening.
Despite the defeat, Morocco can leave the tournament with considerable pride. Their disciplined performances throughout the competition once again demonstrated the growing strength of African football on the global stage.
Young midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi also earned praise for another composed display in midfield before making way shortly before France’s decisive spell.
For France, the victory further strengthened their reputation as one of the favourites to lift the trophy. Deschamps’ side has now conceded only two goals during the tournament while maintaining an impressive balance between defensive organization and attacking efficiency.
Mbappé’s latest goal took his tally to eight in the tournament, keeping him firmly in contention for the Golden Boot. His pace, creativity and leadership continue to drive France’s campaign as they prepare for another high-profile knockout match.
France will now face either Spain or Belgium in the semi-finals, knowing victory would send them into a second consecutive FIFA World Cup final. With Mbappé in outstanding form and the squad performing with confidence across every area of the pitch, France remain firmly on course for another memorable chapter in their football history.
