Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s political vehicle, The Equitable Party (TEP), is preparing to change its name to Linda Mwananchi Movement as the senator positions himself for the 2027 General Election.
TEP’s National Executive Council approved the proposed rebranding during a meeting on Wednesday, paving the way for the party to begin the formal process of adopting the Linda Mwananchi identity.
The Registrar of Political Parties has also approved changes to the names of TEP officials, clearing an important administrative requirement.
Sifuna unveiled TEP in Nairobi on October 4 as the political vehicle for his 2027 presidential ambitions. He explained that the existing party was being used as a temporary platform while his team pursued the Linda Mwananchi name.
The senator has previously said his political movement was forced to seek an alternative party after efforts to establish a new political outfit faced legal and regulatory hurdles.
The proposed rebranding follows the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties’ decision to reserve the Linda Mwananchi Movement name for 90 days after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal directed the office to reconsider an earlier rejection.
However, the proposed name change still faces an outstanding dispute. Charles Wanyonyi has asked the Registrar to prioritise his earlier application for the name Linda Mwananchi Party of Kenya, which he says was submitted in February.
Sifuna has said TEP will remain in place if the planned rebranding encounters further obstacles.
The move comes as political parties prepare for the 2027 election, with parties required to submit the names and specimen signatures of their authorised officials to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission by October 15.
At the TEP launch, Sifuna presented the new political vehicle as one that would focus on accountability, constitutionalism, service and issues affecting ordinary Kenyans, including employment, education, healthcare, farming and the cost of running small businesses.
If completed, the rebranding will give Sifuna’s political movement the Linda Mwananchi identity it has used during recent mobilisation activities as he builds his campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
