President William Ruto has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), calling for an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities.

The ongoing military actions, including the closure of airspace in Goma, have worsened an already dire humanitarian crisis, leaving countless civilians in urgent need of assistance.

In a statement issued on Sunday, President Ruto highlighted the critical need for all parties involved in the conflict to prioritize peace and ensure unhindered humanitarian access to affected populations.

“The escalating conflict is a tragedy that must come to an end. I urge both sides to pursue peaceful means to resolve this crisis and alleviate the suffering of the people,” he said.

As the current chair of the East African Community (EAC), Ruto reaffirmed his commitment to facilitating dialogue and conflict resolution.

He revealed that he has engaged in discussions with DRC President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, urging them to heed the region’s and the international community’s calls for peace.

President Ruto also announced plans to convene an Extraordinary Summit of EAC Heads of State within the next 48 hours to address the crisis and chart a path forward.

The meeting is expected to explore measures to de-escalate tensions, foster dialogue, and mobilize international support for peace initiatives.

“The EAC stands united in its commitment to finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict,” Ruto stated. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with other regional and international bodies, including the African Union, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the global community.

The conflict in the DRC has been marked by widespread violence, displacement, and a growing humanitarian emergency. The closure of Goma’s airspace has further hampered relief efforts, leaving aid workers struggling to reach those in need.

Ruto’s call for peace underscores the urgency of addressing the root causes of the conflict and fostering sustainable solutions.

As the region awaits the outcomes of the upcoming EAC summit, there is hope that intensified diplomatic efforts will bring an end to the hostilities and pave the way for lasting peace in the DRC.

The international community has also been urged to provide support and resources to facilitate dialogue and rebuild trust among the warring parties, ensuring the safety and well-being of millions of civilians caught in the crossfire.
