Improved security in Northern Kenya has created a more stable environment for residents to engage in economic activities, laying the groundwork for accelerated growth and increased investment in the region.
President William Ruto has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to unlocking Northern Kenya’s economic potential through major infrastructure development, including the 750-kilometre Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project.
The flagship road project, valued at approximately KSh100 billion, will connect Isiolo to Mandera through Wajir, significantly improving transport and trade links across the region.
The corridor passes through Isiolo County, Meru County, Garissa County, Wajir County and Mandera County, while also strengthening regional connectivity with neighbouring Ethiopia and Somalia.
“The road will ease movement of people and goods, reduce transport costs, expand market access and boost cross-border trade, especially in the livestock sector which is a key economic backbone of the region,” the government noted.
During his inspection tour, President Ruto assessed the progress of works on the 64-kilometre Tarbaj–Kotulo section of the Isiolo–Mandera highway in Tarbaj Constituency, Wajir County.
More than 11 contractors have been deployed across different sections of the expansive corridor to ensure timely completion of the project.
The government says the infrastructure drive, supported by improved security in the region, will open up Northern Kenya, enhance regional trade, and accelerate economic transformation.
