Grade 9 student arrested after classmate fatally attacked in Migori

A 17-year-old Grade 9 student has been arrested in Uriri Sub-county, Migori County, after allegedly attacking and killing a fellow student following a dispute over learning materials and a school locker.
Police said the incident occurred July 22 as the victim was walking home from school. The suspect allegedly confronted his classmate before attacking him with a panga, leaving him with severe injuries.
The injured student was rushed to Migori Level Four Hospital for emergency treatment but later died while receiving medical care.
Police officers launched investigations immediately after the incident and arrested the suspect, who is currently in custody as detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal attack.
The body of the deceased was moved to the hospital mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination. The suspect is expected to be processed through the juvenile justice system in accordance with the law.
Authorities have urged members of the public to remain calm as investigations continue.
The incident has shocked residents, parents and the school community in Uriri, raising fresh concerns over violence among learners and the need for stronger conflict resolution mechanisms in schools.
Residents who spoke to reporters said the two students had reportedly disagreed over the use of learning materials and access to a school locker before the confrontation escalated outside the school compound.
Education stakeholders in Migori County have called for enhanced guidance and counseling programs to help learners manage disputes peacefully and to address cases of indiscipline before they turn violent.
County education officials said they are working with school administrators to establish what happened and to provide psychosocial support to students and teachers affected by the incident.
Police said preliminary investigations indicate the attack was not planned and may have resulted from a long-running disagreement between the two learners.
Cases of violence among students have raised concern across the country, with calls for the Ministry of Education, parents and communities to work together to instill discipline and promote nonviolent conflict resolution.
In Migori, local chiefs and Nyumba Kumi elders have been holding meetings with parents to encourage closer monitoring of children’s behavior both in school and at home.
Police said the suspect remains in custody and will be presented in court once investigations are complete.
