Detectives have arrested two additional suspects in connection with the murder of 65-year-old Evelyne Mukiri Mbaabu, who was killed inside her home in Kithoka Village, Meru County, on August 7, 2026.
The latest arrests follow investigations that allegedly uncovered a plot involving a longstanding land dispute, with detectives believing the suspects conspired to have the elderly woman killed before hiring the first suspect to execute the murder.
The two suspects have been identified as Godwin Kimathi, the deceased’s brother, and Beth Muthomi, who is the sister of the first suspect and sister-in-law to the deceased.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), investigators established that the suspects maintained communication both before and after the killing, pointing to possible prior planning and coordination.
Their arrest comes after the earlier apprehension of Solomon Kathurima Kairemia on September 22, 2026, following intensive investigations into the murder.
Evelyne was reportedly attacked at around 7:20 p.m. while preparing supper alongside her 13-year-old grandson inside her home. The assailants struck during the evening, killing her in the presence of the young family member.
The two newly arrested suspects have since been presented before court, where orders were issued for them to be detained pending a mental assessment.
They are expected to take a plea on November 4, 2026, as the legal process continues.
In a statement, the DCI extended its condolences to the family, friends and relatives of the late Evelyne Mukiri Mbaabu.
The agency said investigations remain ongoing as detectives pursue additional leads to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killing and ensure that everyone involved is brought to justice.
The latest arrests mark a significant development in the case, with investigators now pursuing alleged links between the land dispute, the suspected planning of the murder and the execution of the crime.
