Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vehemently responded to President William Ruto’s recent accusations, which have stirred political tensions in Kenya.

In a statement that followed Ruto’s remarks, Gachagua rejected the claims made by the president and lashed out at the notion that he had blackmailed Ruto into giving him Sh10 billion to secure support in the Mount Kenya region.

President Ruto had publicly detailed why he fell out with his former deputy, claiming that Gachagua threatened to make him a one-term president unless he received the requested sum.

The president alleged that Gachagua demanded the money to help him garner support in the critical Mount Kenya region. “He came to me and said unless I gave him 10 billion shillings, he would force me into a one-term presidency,” Ruto said in a live conversation with Mount Kenya media.

In his response, Gachagua denied the accusations and lashed out at the president, dismissing the claim as “pathological lying.” “I am now convinced more than ever before that pathological lying is a mental disorder,” Gachagua said in a statement.

The former deputy president further criticized Ruto’s narrative, claiming that such dishonesty poses a significant threat to the country.

“The greatest existential threat to our beloved country is outright lying to the people of Kenya without blinking,” Gachagua said. “It is even worse when a leader fails to harmonize their lies with their team. I weep for my country, Kenya,” he added, expressing his frustration over the direction the political discourse has taken.

The tension between President Ruto and Gachagua has been escalating ever since the former deputy president left office.

Ruto’s detailed accusations have shed light on the breakdown in their working relationship, with the president’s claims of blackmail and political manipulation setting the stage for further conflict within Kenya’s leadership circles.
