Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, recently impeached , took a moment to extend his heartfelt best wishes to the thousands of candidates sitting for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
In a statement, Gachagua emphasized the importance of this moment in shaping the future of the students, wishing them resounding success as they embark on this critical phase of their academic journey.
“For the last four years, you have been preparing for this defining moment as you write the exam that will secure your future. I wish you all success, and may God guide you during this period,” he stated, offering encouragement during what is often seen as a high-pressure period for students across the country.
This expression of support comes at a time when Gachagua himself is facing significant political challenges.
His impeachment by the National Assembly on October 8, 2024, and the Senate impeachment marked a historic moment, as it was the first time under Kenya’s 2010 Constitution that a sitting Deputy President faced removal from office.
The charges brought against him included corruption, ethnic discrimination, and contradictory policy positions that allegedly strained his relationship with President William Ruto.
Despite a motion to annul the impeachment being dismissed by the High Court, Gachagua continues to maintain his innocence.
While Gachagua’s political future remains uncertain, his message to KCSE candidates underlines the importance of education as a pillar for future opportunities in Kenya.
The 2024 KCSE exams, which began on October 22, are particularly notable for the new security measures introduced by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), including personalized exam papers in a bid to curb cheating.
Despite the turbulence surrounding his position, Gachagua’s outreach to students serves as a reminder of the importance of focus and determination, qualities he himself will need as he continues to fight for his political survival in Kenya’s rapidly evolving landscape.
The Deputy President’s future hangs in the balance, but for now, he seeks to uplift and inspire the young minds shaping tomorrow’s Kenya.
