A devastating helicopter crash in Nandi County on Saturday evening has resulted in the deaths of six people, among them Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johana Ng’eno.
The helicopter crashed at about 4:45 p.m. on the outskirts of Chepkieb Forest in Mosop, shortly after attempting to take off from a temporary landing site near the forest. Witnesses reported that the accident happened during heavy rainfall and reduced visibility.
Residents said the aircraft had made an emergency landing around 4:00 p.m. due to worsening weather conditions. The pilot was said to have spoken with nearby herders while evaluating whether it was safe to resume the flight.
Shortly afterward, the helicopter took off but was unable to gain enough height. It reportedly hit trees a few metres from where it had lifted off before going down.
“The crash was immediate and intense,” said a local resident who arrived at the scene. “The helicopter caught fire instantly.”
All six occupants — five passengers and the pilot — are believed to have died at the scene. Reports indicate the aircraft had been transporting passengers from Endebess before the tragedy occurred.
Emergency teams and security officers quickly cordoned off the area as investigations into the cause of the crash commenced. Authorities are expected to review weather conditions, the aircraft’s maintenance history, and flight clearance procedures.
The incident has left the people of Emurua Dikirr and the nation in mourning, as leaders and residents grieve the loss of the outspoken MP and the other victims.
Further information is expected as investigations continue and authorities formally identify all those who lost their lives.
