A man accused of murdering a senior West Pokot County government official has pleaded not guilty before the High Court in Eldoret, with the court ordering that he remain in custody pending a ruling on his bond application.

Kevin Wakaba was arraigned before Justice Martha Mutuku on Friday and denied the charge of murdering Ekidor Ekure, a senior procurement officer with the West Pokot County Government.

The judge directed that the accused remain at Eldoret GK Prison until July 9, when the court will rule on whether he should be released on bond.

According to court documents, the alleged murder occurred on Jan. 28, 2026, in Langas Estate, Uasin Gishu County.

Ekure was in Eldoret attending a week-long training workshop with other county officials when he was attacked while taking an evening walk near the hotel where he was staying.

State Prosecutor Sylvester Thuo told the court that the deceased had left the hotel after the day’s training sessions when he was assaulted.

“The slain officer was violently attacked while strolling after a day-long training workshop, just a few metres from the hotel where he was staying,” Thuo told the court.

The prosecution said police investigations led to the arrest of Wakaba and the recovery of a mobile phone believed to belong to the deceased.

“The security operation led to the recovery of the deceased’s mobile phone, while two suspected accomplices remain at large,” Thuo said.

The prosecution did not disclose further details about the ongoing search for the two suspects.

During the proceedings, Wakaba applied to be released on bond, arguing that he was not a flight risk and requesting reasonable bail terms.

Justice Mutuku declined to make an immediate determination on the application.

“I will make a ruling on the bond application on July 9, 2026. In the meantime, the accused shall remain at Eldoret GK Prison,” the judge ruled.

The case will be mentioned on July 9, when the court is expected to determine the bond application before setting further directions for the murder trial.

Under Kenyan law, a person charged with murder is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. If convicted, the offence carries the penalties prescribed under the Penal Code.
