President William Ruto has announced that the government will spend KSh7 billion to construct the long-awaited Nithi Bridge, a project aimed at improving road safety and easing transport along the Meru-Embu highway.
Speaking during his development tour of the region, Ruto said construction has already begun, with the contractor on site and works underway.
“The government has allocated KSh7 billion for the construction of Nithi Bridge. The contractor is already on site, and the long-awaited project is now underway,” the President said.
Ruto said the government is committed to completing the project on schedule, describing it as a major investment in road safety and infrastructure.
He noted that the new bridge is intended to address longstanding safety concerns at the existing Nithi Bridge, an area that has recorded numerous fatal road crashes over the years.
Located along the busy Meru-Embu highway, the current crossing has long been regarded as one of Kenya’s major accident black spots because of its steep descent, sharp curves and challenging terrain. The section has been the scene of multiple crashes involving buses, trucks and private vehicles, resulting in significant loss of life.
The President said the new bridge will provide a safer transport corridor for motorists while improving the movement of passengers and cargo between the Eastern and Central regions.
Once completed, the project is expected to reduce travel time, enhance road safety and facilitate trade by improving connectivity along one of the country’s key transport routes.
Residents and local leaders welcomed the government’s commitment, saying the project has been awaited for many years.
“This bridge will save lives and improve business in our region. We have waited for this project for many years,” a local leader said during the President’s visit.
The Nithi Bridge project forms part of the government’s broader infrastructure development agenda, which includes upgrading roads, expanding transport networks and improving public safety to support economic growth across the country.
The government has identified investment in transport infrastructure as a key pillar of its development strategy, with several major road projects currently underway to improve connectivity and reduce the cost of moving people and goods nationwide.
