Government leaders have praised the return of peace and stability in West Pokot County, even as concerns grow over illegal and unregulated mining activities blamed for recent deaths and injuries in the region.
Speaking during a thanksgiving service at Dini ya Roho Mafuta Pole ya Africa in Sakale, leaders commended residents for voluntarily surrendering illegal firearms and supporting ongoing peace initiatives.
“We celebrate the return of peace and security in West Pokot County, and we are making deliberate and targeted efforts to sustain the gains,” the leaders said.
They also praised local leaders and residents for working closely with security agencies to maintain stability in an area that has historically experienced insecurity linked to illegal firearms and cross-border conflicts.

However, concern was raised over increasing cases of unsafe and unregulated mining activities in the Romos and Morita areas, where recent incidents reportedly resulted in fatalities and injuries.
“Despite these gains, illegal and unregulated mining activities still pose security and safety threats,” the leaders noted, adding that the government will work jointly with the relevant ministry and the county government to restore order and regulate the sector.
Authorities urged residents involved in mining activities to observe safety standards to prevent further tragedies.
“We pray for the bereaved families, wish a quick recovery to those injured, and urge locals to adhere to safety standards as they undertake mining activities,” they added.
The leaders were attending a church fundraiser aimed at supporting planned infrastructure development projects.
They commended the church for its role in promoting community development, supporting education initiatives, and contributing to peacebuilding efforts in the county.
Among leaders present were Joel Arumonyang, Samuel Moroto, Rael Kasiwai, former governor John Lonyangapuo, and several Members of County Assembly.
