The government has started distributing two million fertiliser bags across the nation to support farmers during the current long rains planting season.
The Port of Mombasa served as the official launch site for the project which the State Department for Agriculture Principal Secretary Paul Kiprono Ronoh launched. Dr. Ronoh who presided over the flag-off event confirmed that the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) will receive fertiliser shipments at their 352 depots throughout the nation making it available to all farmers.
The fertiliser delivery brings vital support to numerous farmers who previously complained about supply delays because the long rains had already begun in multiple areas. Farmers need timely fertiliser access because it directly affects their crop yield which is critical for maintaining national food security.
Dr. Ronoh confirmed that the government is committed to improving the agricultural sector through this distribution which supports two main objectives. The distribution serves as part of governmental efforts to improve agricultural productivity while reducing the financial burden of essential farm inputs on farmers.
The agricultural sector stakeholders have expressed their approval of the initiative which enables farmers to continue their planting activities without facing additional delays. The NCPB depots which offer subsidised fertiliser will help improve maize production and increase the nation’s overall food supply according to researchers.
Farmers must pick up their fertiliser from designated depots without delay to take advantage of the current rain period which will help them achieve better crop yields this season.
