Farmers in the Ukambani region have been urged to adopt modern farming and quality control practices to enable their mango produce compete effectively in international markets.
Speaking in Machakos during the official opening of a three-day trade expo at Machakos Golf Club, Dr.Eric Ruto, President of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI), said the region holds immense potential in mango production but must improve quality standards to access lucrative export markets.
Dr. Ruto noted that Ukambani remains the leading mango-producing region in the country, but challenges in quality control and post-harvest handling have limited farmers’ ability to penetrate global markets.
“Ukambani produces some of the highest volumes of mangoes in the country, which is a huge advantage for farmers. However, the next step is improving quality standards so that the produce can meet international market requirements,” said Ruto.
He emphasized the need for farmers to reorganize themselves into cooperatives and farmer societies to strengthen training, improve production techniques, and enhance quality assurance mechanisms.
“It is time for mango farmers in the region to embrace new farming methods, strengthen quality control and work collectively through organized groups. This will not only improve the quality of the fruit but also open doors to international markets,” he added.
Ruto observed that despite the availability of free market opportunities in countries such as the United Kingdom, many farmers in the region have struggled for years to meet the stringent export standards required in global trade.
He expressed optimism that with better training, improved farming practices, and stronger farmer organizations, the region could significantly boost its competitiveness and transform mango farming into a major export industry.
The three-day trade expo has brought together entrepreneurs, farmers, and industry players to showcase local products, exchange ideas, and explore opportunities aimed at strengthening trade and investment in the region.
