Youth in Uasin Gishu County are working hand in hand with the county government in an effort to eliminate illicit alcohol and drug use, thereby reaffirming its commitment toward protecting communities from substances that endanger public health and safety. Support for this engagement came up during a ceremony with local artist Thomas Kipkemboi Alias Kapkeno , who had embarked on a symbolic protest by climbing and staying atop a tree for close to 47 hours to spur the community into action against the evils of illicit alcohol and narcotic drugs. While addressing the audience, County Director of Alcoholic Drinks Control Board, Koya Arap Maiyo, said that the county would be behind all the initiatives by the youth aimed at ending the production, distribution, and sale of illegal substances.
County Warns Illegal Traders
Maiyo gave a strong warning to all those contravening the law by producing as well as selling illegal brews and drugs, saying the county government will not take such activities lightly. He mentioned that the Uasin Gishu County Government is under the leadership of Governor Jonathan Bii, and it is firm and determined to ensure that this county is safe and free from imported harmful substances. Licensed alcohol traders had also been warned against violating the law by selling alcohol to minors or operating near learning institutions. Violation of these regulations will see such businesses shut down, according to Maiyo.
Awareness Campaigns Require Youth and Digital Platforms
The county official praised Kapkeno’s action as attesting to the readiness of young people to take the lead in the fight against drugs and alcohol abuse. He noted that the youth are energetic and knowledgeable enough to influence positive change in their communities.
Maiyo has further urged young people to use social media and other digital platforms to spread awareness, saying online channels have proven to be the fast and effective way to reach big audiences. Besides, he said, the county continued enforcing laws on illicit alcohol and drugs day-and-night to safeguard residents while ensuring a healthy future for children and youth in Uasin Gishu.
