The director of Uasin Gishu County Alcoholic Drinks Control Board, Koiya Arap Maiyo ,has called on the national government to ban alcohol advertisements across all media platforms. Speaking at a graduation ceremony for rehabilitated individuals at the Moiben Rehabilitation Centre, Maiyo emphasized the detrimental impact of alcohol on the nation’s economy and youth.

“The economic losses caused by alcohol consumption far outweigh the revenue generated from its taxation,” Maiyo stated. “We must prioritize the health and future of our youth over commercial interests.”

The Moiben Rehabilitation Centre, established by the county government of Uasin Gishu, has been instrumental in combating substance abuse. To date, over 1,550 individuals have undergone rehabilitation at the facility, with more than 40 graduates in the latest cohort. The program offers free services, providing a lifeline to those unable to afford private treatment options. County officials have announced plans to expand the centre’s infrastructure to accommodate the growing demand.

“This initiative has been a beacon of hope for many,” said a recent graduate. “Without it, I wouldn’t have had the means to seek help.”

The county’s efforts extend beyond rehabilitation. Under Governor Jonathan Bii’s leadership, Uasin Gishu has revoked licenses for over 1,300 bars and drinking establishments, reducing the number of licensed outlets to approximately 700. This move aims to curb the proliferation of alcohol, especially near schools and residential areas .

“Our crackdown on illicit brews and unlicensed bars is part of a broader strategy to address the root causes of addiction,” Maiyo explained. “We are committed to creating a safer, healthier environment for our residents.”

The county’s comprehensive approach also includes plans to establish a new drug rehabilitation centre at Kamalel Health Centre, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Tobacco Control Board. This initiative seeks to provide additional support to individuals grappling with substance abuse .

As the government continues to implement measures to combat addiction, stakeholders await further directives on the proposed ban on alcohol advertising. Maiyo’s call to action underscores the urgency of addressing the pervasive issue of substance abuse in Kenya.
