Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering inclusive global collaboration by endorsing China’s newly established Global Governance Initiative (GGI). The People’s Republic of China launched the initiative with a focus on reforming global governance institutions while backing improved multilateral relations across the world.

Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi, stated that the initiative was both timely and required when he met Mr. Zhang Zhizhong, the Chinese Embassy’s Deputy Head of Mission, in Nairobi. He commended China for initiating the GGI and welcomed the prospect of Kenya collaborating closely in realizing its goals.

I join other nations of goodwill in congratulating the Government of the People’s Republic of China for launching the Global Governance Initiative,” said Mudavadi. He observed that the proposal has come at an opportune moment when the world has pressing issues that need a collective effort.

The GGI provides a solid foundation for reinvigorating multilateralism rooted in international law, mutual respect, sovereignty, and peaceful coexistence, Mudavadi said. He added that the initiative seeks to unite nations on shared principles that promote fairness and predictability in international affairs. “The GGI provides an opportunity to establish a rules-based order where cooperation delivers win-win results and human beings are maintained at the forefront of progress,” he added.

Prime CS also reiterated Kenya’s readiness to participate fully in the shaping and implementation of the initiative, adding that this collaboration will further strengthen ties between Nairobi and Beijing.

China’s GGI joins a series of earlier frameworks put forward by the nation, including the Global Development Initiative (GDI), the Global Security Initiative (GSI), and the Global Civilisation Initiative (GCI). They all have varying but complementary objectives: the GDI advocates for shared development dreams, the GSI encourages dialogue in the settlement of conflicts, and the GCI intercultural understanding and learning from one another.

Mr. Zhang Zhizhong stressed that although the four proposals are aimed at different areas, they can operate together to provide stability and direction sorely needed in a turbulent world. “Together, they bring positive energy to global cooperation and constitute a solid foundation for the shared future of mankind,” he stated.

Through its endorsement of the GGI, Kenya shows that it is determined to struggle for a more just and representative international order, where global governance reflects the voice and ambition of the Global South as well as that of established powers.
