President William Ruto has called on Kenyans to come together to fight corruption. He said no title, office, rank, or region will provide cover for anyone from being taken to court.
Speaking to the nation on Saturday, August 30, in Kapsabet, Nandi County, the President oversaw the installation of Catholic Bishop John Lelei. He reminded Kenyans that the country can only progress if corruption, tribalism, and division are dealt with ruthlessly.
“If we come together and fight corruption, misappropriation of public resources, and politics of division, Kenya will move forward,” Ruto stated. “I believe in the potential and greatness of this nation.”
His remarks came days after the government formed a multi-agency team to intensify the anti-corruption struggle. The team includes the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), and the Asset Recovery Agency, among other essential institutions.
Ruto also talked about the closure of some health centers by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council. The council closed down the centers after an establishment that they were operating against the laws. The President ruled that the institutions must be held accountable for their actions and comply with the law.
To the church, Ruto pledged all government assistance to the newly established diocese. “In the name of the government, I promise you we will work hand in hand to develop this diocese,” he stated.
Nandi Governor Stephen Sang welcomed the ordination of Bishop Lelei. He further noted that the people of Nandi had longed for many years to have that moment. Sang also thanked Bishop Dominic Kimengich of Uasin Gishu for stabilizing the diocese since the death of Bishop Cornelius Korir in 2017.
In his first speech, Bishop Lelei was brimming with gratitude and commitment. “I am grateful and ready to serve. To other bishops, if I come knocking at your door, kindly open and help me,” he noted.
President Ruto will be returning to Nandi in October for a development tour. He is expected to open projects and start new projects across the county during the tour.
The President’s tough message in Kapsabet was forthright: corruption and fragmentation must end if Kenya is to live its true promise.
