National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula was on Sunday bestowed with the honorary title of elder by the Samburu community during a cultural ceremony held in Maralal town, Samburu County.

The event, organized by the Samburu Council of Elders, took place in South Horr and featured traditional blessings, chants, songs, and rites that affirmed Wetang’ula’s enduring commitment to advocating for pastoralist communities, good governance, regional peace, and inclusive development.

As a symbol of his new status, the elders presented Wetang’ula with a ceremonial beaded club and a cow horn—iconic emblems in Samburu culture that represent wisdom, leadership, and the responsibility of guiding the community.

Chief Simon Lemboyok of the Samburu Council of Elders emphasized that the Speaker’s induction as an elder was in recognition of his consistent efforts to promote harmony, education, and inter-county collaboration—core values deeply rooted in Samburu traditions.

“This honor reflects Speaker Wetang’ula’s steadfast dedication to peacebuilding, educational support, and promoting unity across counties. He has shown genuine concern for the well-being of marginalized communities,” Chief Lemboyok remarked.

In his address, Speaker Wetang’ula expressed gratitude for the honor and pledged to remain a committed partner in preserving indigenous cultures and championing the rights of pastoralist communities.

“To be embraced as an honorary elder by the Samburu people is a profound honor. I am committed to upholding your traditions, promoting your aspirations, and working to ensure that pastoral communities have a voice in national development,” Wetang’ula said.

He reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to backing regional priorities, including the protection of cultural heritage, strengthening education in remote areas, and addressing security challenges in arid and semi-arid regions.

The Speaker promised to continue advocating for improved livelihoods and policies that uplift historically underserved regions.

Wetang’ula was accompanied by a notable delegation, including Samburu Governor Jonathan Lati Lelelit, former Governor Samuel Lenolkulal, Samburu North MP Dominic Eli Letipila, Laikipia Woman Representative Jane Kagiri, Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda, and Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera, among other leaders.
