Govt Launches Jitume Digital Hub in Embu to Power Youth Skills and Jobs
Kenya’s push to become a leading digital economy gained momentum after the commissioning of the Jitume Digital Hub at Manyatta Technical and Vocational College in Embu County, a move aimed at equipping young people with digital skills for the modern job market.
Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy, Eng. John Tanui, who led the launch, engaged with students shortly after commissioning the facility, encouraging them to take full advantage of the new opportunities created by the government’s digital transformation agenda.
The hub is part of the broader Digital Superhighway Transformation Agenda, which seeks to expand internet access, boost digital literacy, and connect more Kenyans to online employment and innovation opportunities.
Speaking during the event, Eng. Tanui said the government remains committed to ensuring that young people are not left behind in the fast-changing global digital space.
“The President William Ruto administration is fully committed to advancing the Digital Superhighway agenda. We want to ensure that our people, especially the youth, have an opportunity to enhance their digital capabilities and benefit from the opportunities that come with digital connectivity,” he said.
He noted that Kenya’s digital infrastructure has expanded significantly in recent years, with the country now connected through eight submarine cables landed in Mombasa, improving internet speed, reliability, and access to global markets.
Eng. Tanui also highlighted ongoing international engagements aimed at strengthening Kenya’s digital backbone, including discussions around the proposed Blue-Raman Project, which is expected to further enhance global connectivity.
“Our President has been in the EU discussing how Kenya can benefit from the Blue-Raman Project as part of efforts to ensure the country keeps pace with the rapidly evolving digital world,” he added.
Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, who also attended the event, welcomed the initiative, noting that digital hubs within learning institutions will play a key role in empowering youth with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship.
The launch of the Jitume Digital Hub marks another step in the government’s ambition to build a digitally enabled economy, where young people can access training, innovation spaces, and global opportunities from their local institutions.
