President William Ruto has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to strengthening its bilateral partnership with Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of cooperation in education, trade, food security, and technology.
Speaking during a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal in Seville, Spain, President Ruto expressed Kenya’s readiness to enhance collaboration that would benefit both nations.
The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, a high-level global forum focused on strategies to mobilize resources for sustainable development.
President Ruto noted that Kenya values its relationship with Ukraine and is keen on forging stronger ties that can bring meaningful impact, especially in expanding access to educational opportunities for Kenyan students.
He welcomed Ukraine’s willingness to partner in this area, saying it would open doors for more Kenyan learners to pursue higher education and technical training in Ukrainian institutions.
The Kenyan Head of State also highlighted the potential for joint efforts to combat food insecurity, one of the major challenges affecting the Horn of Africa region.
He pointed out that Ukraine, known for its agricultural strength, could utilize Kenya’s strategic location as a key transit point for distributing vital commodities, such as grains, to other parts of Africa.
“This partnership offers significant room for cooperation in sectors such as information and communication technology (ICT), trade, and agriculture—sectors that are critical to our shared aspirations for growth and development,” President Ruto stated.
In addition to economic cooperation, both leaders discussed broader international issues, including peacekeeping and global diplomacy. They pledged to work closely through multilateral channels to support regional and global peace, stability, and mediation efforts.
President Ruto further revealed that the two countries had agreed on new initiatives, including advancing climate finance, encouraging green and sustainable investments, and organizing an international investor forum in Nairobi later this year to explore economic opportunities.
“We agreed on a range of areas for joint action, from climate-friendly financing models to hosting a high-level investment summit that will attract global partners to Kenya,” Ruto said.
The meeting underscored the mutual interest in building a modern and forward-looking partnership between Kenya and Ukraine.
