Uasin Gishu County has intensified its campaign against tobacco use, launching a strong, health-focused initiative under the leadership of Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim.

The renewed effort aims to protect residents from life-threatening diseases associated with tobacco use and second-hand smoke.

On the second day of the Pre-World No Tobacco Day training in Eldoret, Dr. Evans Kiprotich, Director of Health Services, firmly reiterated the county’s position: “No smoking will be tolerated in public spaces.”

He urged enforcement officers to remain vigilant and proactive in shielding the public from the deadly effects of smoking.

The ongoing training program for county enforcement officers is part of a wider effort to curb tobacco consumption, raise awareness, and improve regulation.

It focuses not just on banning smoking but also on tackling counterfeit tobacco products and reducing interference from the tobacco industry.

Dr. Kiprotich noted that officers are being equipped with essential tools and knowledge to:

Avoid partnerships with tobacco companies.

Limit unnecessary interactions with the tobacco industry.

Eliminate conflicts of interest within public offices.

Enforce strict anti-smoking laws in public areas.

Uasin Gishu also advocates for a multi-sectoral approach that brings together various government agencies, civil society, and law enforcement to stop the sale and distribution of illegal tobacco products.

These counterfeits often worsen public health challenges and weaken the country’s enforcement mechanisms.

“This is not just a fight against smoking,” Dr. Kiprotich emphasized. “It’s a fight for the lungs of our people. We are committed to safeguarding the health of every resident.”

The campaign comes at a crucial time, as World No Tobacco Day approaches. Uasin Gishu joins global efforts to reduce tobacco use while focusing on local enforcement, community awareness, and public health protection.

Governor Bii’s administration has taken a clear stance: health comes first. With increased training, tighter regulations, and strong community outreach, the county is determined to build a healthier, smoke-free future.
