Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale today visited the Kenyatta University Teaching, Research and Referral Hospital (KUTRRH) to evaluate its role in advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) under Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Hosted by Board Chair Sen. Kembi Gitura, CS Duale held a consultative meeting with KUTRRH’s senior management to review progress under the new Social Health Authority (SHA) compared to the former NHIF scheme.
The briefing outlined changes in service coverage, including a sharp rise in reimbursement rates: open-heart surgery increased from Ksh 450,000 to Ksh 952,000, dialysis from Ksh 9,500 to Ksh 10,650 per session, and PET/SPECT scans from Ksh 50,000 to Ksh 53,500.
During a facility tour, the CS visited critical departments such as the Cancer Centre Annex, Chemotherapy Unit, CyberKnife, and Transplant ICU.
The hospital leadership appealed for increased funding to support the operationalization of the New Cancer Centre, requesting an expanded budget from Ksh 100 million to Ksh 250 million, acquisition of an additional LINAC machine, better referral policies, and timely SHA reimbursements.
Commending KUTRRH for successfully conducting its first two kidney transplants, CS Duale urged the team to fast-track UHC efforts, uphold professionalism, and enhance SHA patient registration campaigns. He emphasized the need for integrity, accountability, and compliance with legal frameworks in staffing, procurement, and financial operations.
In recognition of International Nurses Week 2025, Duale presented certificates to the nurses involved in the historic kidney transplant procedures, lauding their commitment to ethical and legal standards.
He was accompanied by Dr. Patrick Amoth (Director General for Health), Dr. Judith Awinja (Head of Nursing and Midwifery), Dr. Zeinab Gura (KUTRRH CEO), and other senior officials.
