The Cabinet Secretary for Health, Aden Duale, today officially inaugurated the NHIF Pending Medical Claims Verification Committee during a ceremony held at Afya House, Nairobi.

The move marks a significant step in streamlining Kenya’s public health insurance system and restoring public confidence in the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

The newly formed committee was established through Kenya Gazette Notice No. 4069 of March 28, 2025, and is tasked with scrutinizing and verifying all pending NHIF medical claims submitted between July 1, 2022, and September 30, 2024.

In addition to validating these claims, the committee will offer recommendations to the Ministry of Health regarding the settlement of verified cases and implement measures to enhance accountability in health financing.

While addressing stakeholders, CS Duale emphasized the importance of transparency and value for money in the claims verification process.

“This Committee is a critical step towards restoring public trust in our health financing system,” said Duale. “We must ensure that every shilling spent delivers meaningful health outcomes, in line with the Government’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).”

Duale also acknowledged the financial challenges many healthcare providers face, but cautioned that accountability must remain at the center of the verification exercise.

Committee Chairperson Mr. James Masiro echoed the Cabinet Secretary’s sentiments, noting the gravity of the responsibility entrusted to the committee.

He assured the Ministry that the team would carry out its duties with professionalism and integrity.

“We understand that the success of this process depends on our ability to work collaboratively and uphold the highest standards of professionalism,” said Masiro.

The ceremony was attended by key officials, including Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni (Public Health and Professional Standards), Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai (Medical Services), Director-General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, Social Health Authority Acting CEO Mr. Robert Ingasira, and SHA Chairperson Mr. Abdi Mohamed, along with other ministry officials and committee members.

The committee’s work is expected to bring clarity to pending claims, enhance financial integrity, and lay the groundwork for a more efficient and trustworthy national health insurance system.
