The Muslim community in Eldoret gathered in large numbers to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Hundreds of worshippers thronged Masjid Noor Mosque to offer prayers of thanksgiving to Allah for granting them the strength to observe the month-long fast.
During the celebrations, Sheikh Abubakri Bini expressed concerns over the challenges facing Kenyan youth, including unemployment, police harassment, and enforced disappearances, where individuals are later found dead under unclear circumstances. He criticized the government’s inaction in addressing these issues, which he said continue to negatively impact young people across the country.
Sheikh Bini further noted that the growing frustration among the youth has led to protests, with some chanting slogans such as “Ruto must go” whenever the President makes a public appearance. He emphasized that these grievances should be taken seriously, especially amid the prevailing tough economic conditions, where many families are struggling to afford basic necessities.
The outspoken cleric also condemned the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) for allegedly planning to allocate hefty allowances to Members of Parliament while many youths remain jobless and desperate.
“This time around, we, the elderly, will also take to the streets to demand an end to such greed and impunity,” Bini stated.
He vowed that the Muslim community would not remain silent as leaders engage in corruption, which he warned could bring the country to ruin.
Meanwhile, Jamal Diriwo, another Muslim leader, called on the Office of the Chief Kadhi and other Muslim leaders to foster unity and speak with one voice. He urged the Muslim community to show respect for national institutions, including the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), and to promote peace and cohesion.
Eid al-Fitr, which marks the conclusion of Ramadan, is traditionally a time of joy, reflection, and generosity, with leaders urging the faithful to embrace the spirit of togetherness and sharing.
