Uasin Gishu County has been ranked among Kenya’s top 10 performing counties in the 2025 County Budget Transparency Survey (CBTS), scoring 76 points for its efforts in promoting accountability, public participation and openness in governance.
Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim welcomed the recognition, saying it reflects the county administration’s commitment to transparent leadership and inclusive governance.
According to the governor, the ranking highlights the progress made in improving public financial management and ensuring residents have access to key budget information.
“This recognition affirms our dedication to accountable, transparent and citizen-focused governance. It is a reflection of the deliberate measures we have taken to strengthen public participation and promote responsible management of public resources,” said Governor Bii.
The survey places Uasin Gishu among the country’s leading counties in budget transparency and citizen engagement, underscoring efforts to make government processes more accessible to the public.
Governor Bii attributed the achievement to strong collaboration between the county government and civil society organizations that have supported initiatives aimed at enhancing accountability and public oversight.
He acknowledged the role played by the Uasin Gishu CSO Network, The Institute for Social Accountability and Transparency International in advancing transparency programmes and encouraging greater public involvement in governance.
The governor noted that providing residents with access to budget information enables them to better understand how public funds are allocated and spent, helping to build trust between citizens and government institutions.
He added that transparency remains a key pillar of the county’s development agenda under the Nguzo Kumi programme, which is focused on improving service delivery and driving socio-economic growth.
“As we advance the Nguzo Kumi agenda, we remain committed to building an open, responsive and development-oriented county that delivers tangible benefits to all residents,” he said.
The recognition comes amid growing calls for county governments to strengthen accountability in the management of public resources and increase citizen participation in decision-making.
County officials expressed confidence that the achievement will encourage further reforms aimed at enhancing transparency, strengthening accountability mechanisms and improving public confidence in government institutions.
The latest CBTS ranking reinforces Uasin Gishu’s position as one of Kenya’s leading counties in promoting open governance, fiscal responsibility and effective public financial management.
