Detectives have arrested two suspected members of a criminal gang in Kisumu and recovered a homemade firearm and an assortment of crude weapons and police gear following a targeted security operation.

The operation was carried out by a joint team comprising officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Operations Support Unit (OSU), the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) and the GSU Tactical Team, acting on credible intelligence about the suspects’ activities.

According to the DCI, the officers moved swiftly after receiving information linking the suspects to a series of criminal activities in Kisumu and its environs, leading to the arrest of Joseph Mwata Magak, alias “Boyi Sampa”, and Isaac Omondi Ojwang’.

Following their arrest, detectives conducted a search at Magak’s rented house in Mamboleo Pocho Estate in Kisumu, where they uncovered a cache of items hidden in the master bedroom.

Among the items recovered were a homemade gun capable of firing, a bow with four arrows, a panga, a toy pistol, five rolls of bhang, a police siren, a pair of police boots, six pairs of jungle-green tactical trousers, a camouflage jacket, a pair of tactical boots and a bottle of gun oil.

Officers also recovered a Kenyan flag and a Subaru front bumper, among other items believed to be linked to criminal activities.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that Joseph Mwata Magak is already facing an ongoing case of attempted robbery with violence before the Nakuru Law Courts.

The DCI said the suspects are currently in custody undergoing processing pending arraignment in court, while the recovered items have been secured as exhibits for use as evidence.

The directorate commended members of the public for providing timely and actionable intelligence, noting that such information remains a critical weapon in the fight against organized crime.

The DCI noted that collaboration between security agencies and the public continues to play a key role in dismantling criminal networks and enhancing safety in communities.

The latest arrest comes amid heightened operations across the country to flush out criminal gangs and recover illegal firearms in the hands of civilians.

Police have urged Kenyans to continue sharing information with security agencies through anonymous reporting channels, assuring that all information shared will be handled confidentially.

Investigations into the activities of the two suspects are ongoing to establish whether they are linked to other robberies and criminal incidents reported in Kisumu and neighbouring counties.
