Two students have been arrested in connection with an arson incident that destroyed part of a dormitory at Agoro Sare High School in Oyugis Town, Rachuonyo South Sub-county.

The suspects, both 17-year-old Form Three students at the school, were arrested after they were allegedly identified by fellow students following investigations into the fire.

Rachuonyo South Sub-county Police Commander Philemon Saera confirmed the arrests, saying the students are currently in police custody as detectives continue with investigations.

“The students are currently under police custody to assist with investigations,” said Saera.

According to authorities, the fire broke out at around 3:40 a.m. on Saturday during the school’s parents’ visiting day. Investigators believe the suspects allegedly sneaked back into the dormitory before setting it ablaze.

Agoro Sare High School Principal Dr. Isaac Okeyo said the school administration, students, and local residents worked together to contain the fire before it spread to other sections of the institution.

“School management, students and local residents joined efforts to contain the fire before it spread further. However, the flames completely destroyed Cubicles 04 and 06 of Maangi Dormitory, which has a capacity of 280 students,” said Dr. Okeyo.

The principal said beds, mattresses, books, and students’ clothing were reduced to ashes, although the total value of the destroyed property is yet to be established.

Police confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were reported during the incident.

“Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported during the incident,” said Police Commander Saera.

The incident has renewed concerns over rising cases of unrest in learning institutions, with education stakeholders calling for stronger collaboration between parents, schools, and security agencies to address destructive behaviour among students and safeguard school property.
