Tragedy struck the Kapseret area of Uasin Gishu County after two middle-aged men lost their lives while attempting to clean a domestic well.
According to local resident Joseph Ondimu, the incident occurred early in the morning around 7:00 a.m. when one of the men entered the well to begin cleaning.
Unfortunately, he became trapped inside. In an attempt to rescue him, the second man also entered the well but sadly met the same fate. Both men are believed to have suffocated due to a lack of oxygen.
The incident has deeply shocked the Deblock community, particularly as the two brothers had recently buried their father just a month ago. Residents expressed sorrow and concern over the recurring nature of such tragedies involving wells and boreholes.
Ondimu urged residents to seek professional services when undertaking well or borehole cleaning, noting the importance of safety and expertise in such hazardous environments.
This incident comes just weeks after a similar case in Ilula village, a few kilometers from Eldoret City, where the Uasin Gishu County emergency response team retrieved the body of a man who had also suffocated while cleaning a borehole.
Uasin Gishu County Chief Fire Officer David Sitati confirmed that this is the fourth such case reported in the area within the last two months. He warned of the dangers of entering wells or boreholes, especially during hot weather conditions, which reduce oxygen levels in confined spaces.
“It is dangerous to enter boreholes without proper equipment and training, particularly in high temperatures. We advise residents to be cautious and to hire qualified personnel,” Sitati said.
He further urged homeowners to ensure that wells and boreholes are properly covered and maintained to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
