In a crackdown on examination malpractice, Kenyan authorities have arrested a suspect accused of orchestrating a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam leak.
The suspect allegedly managed an online group, “KCSE 2024 Leakage Group,” where examination papers were disseminated in exchange for payments, exploiting desperate students and parents seeking guaranteed high grades.
A message captured from the group highlighted the scheme’s boldness: “All KCSE papers are with me right now. Big schools are already in touch with my papers… B+ and above is assured and guaranteed after payments.”
This message, shared in an image by investigators, exemplified the extent to which the suspect attempted to entice participants into paying for unauthorized access to exam materials.
Detectives from the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), in collaboration with their Masaba North counterparts, conducted a raid at the suspect’s residence in Nyamira County.
The search resulted in the seizure of critical evidence, including a mobile phone and a laptop, believed to be the main tools used to execute the illegal operation.
These devices are currently undergoing forensic analysis to uncover further details about the suspect’s network and potential collaborators.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) affirmed that this arrest forms part of a broader strategy to curb examination malpractices that threaten the integrity of Kenya’s educational system.
Exam leaks have been a recurring challenge, undermining the credibility of national assessments and putting students who study honestly at a disadvantage.
The arrest underscores a heightened vigilance by authorities to protect the fairness of the KCSE, a pivotal examination for secondary school students seeking to advance their academic careers.
