The Chief Principal of The Eldoret National Polytechnic, Dr. Charles Koech, OGW, has commended the ongoing student elections, describing them as a vital exercise in promoting democratic values and leadership development among trainees.
Speaking during the elections, Dr. Koech emphasized the importance of student leadership in driving institutional progress and fostering participatory governance.
“The institution is currently conducting the student general elections, a process that empowers trainees to choose leaders who will advocate for their interests and engage the administration on their behalf,” he noted.
He praised the recent constitutional amendments initiated and approved by the student body, highlighting their proactive role in shaping a governance structure that reflects their needs.
“We welcome this initiative wholeheartedly. The students themselves took the lead in revising their constitution, ensuring it better addresses their current and future aspirations,” he added.
Dr. Koech affirmed the institution’s unwavering support for the student electoral process, emphasizing the administration’s role in ensuring it is smooth, fair, and well-facilitated.
“Our responsibility as the administration is to provide the necessary support and logistics to ensure the process is successful and credible,” he stated.
He further outlined the integrity measures in place, noting that all candidates undergo a rigorous vetting process in accordance with the eligibility requirements set out in the student constitution.
“To maintain the integrity of the election, all aspirants are subjected to a transparent vetting process. Only those who meet the criteria appear on the ballot,” he explained.
In a bid to enhance the credibility of the elections, the institution partnered with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
“We engaged the IEBC to train election officials, including presiding officers and clerks. They are also overseeing the elections to ensure they meet national standards of fairness and transparency,” he said.
Dr. Koech lauded both the candidates and the student community for their discipline and maturity throughout the election period.
“Trainees have demonstrated commendable conduct during this entire process. I extend my best wishes to all the candidates as the elections continue,” he concluded.
