At least seven people have been confirmed dead and 27 others suffered injuries after a really tragic head on collision involving a Rembo Shuttle bus and a trailer at ACK Salama along the Mombasa–Nairobi Highway on Sunday night, it was reported.

The Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association, LoDDCA, said the crash happened in the area, and they also warned motorists to be extra careful as emergency teams were already working at the scene.

“Head-on collision between a Rembo Shuttle bus and a trailer at ACK Salama. Approach the area with caution,” LoDDCA said in a quick alert.

Even as the rescue efforts continued authorities, and emergency personnel, stayed around the accident spot while investigations into what caused the crash started. Motorists were then advised to expect traffic delays along that stretch of the highway.

LoDDCA shared images showing the Rembo Shuttle bus with extensive damage after the impact. The bus was also pictured right next to a trailer carrying a blue CMA CGM container, which just showed how severe the collision was.

Firefighters and other responders were present too, helping to get victims out and then dealing with the aftermath.

The crash happened at Salama, along the busy Mombasa–Nairobi Highway, a major transport route that links Nairobi to the Coast region and other parts of the country.

Kenya Red Cross later said 27 critically injured casualties were rushed to Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital for treatment after the incident.

“Twenty-seven critically injured casualties were evacuated to Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital following a major road traffic incident involving a truck, a bus, two private vehicles and a motorcycle at Salama on the Mombasa–Nairobi Highway last night,” the organisation said.

They added that the emergency response involved the Kenya Red Cross, county emergency services, the National Police Service and other partners, all working together to rescue the victims and provide urgent medical attention.

Investigations are still ongoing as authorities try to understand how exactly the deadly collision unfolded and what circumstances led up to it.
