Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua questioned the legitimacy of the impeachment motion presented by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, casting doubt on whether it was genuinely his initiative.

Wambua’s pointed inquiry followed a heated session in which the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was being debated.

Wambua expressed concerns that Mutuse might have been persuaded to sign and defend the motion without fully understanding its implications or the evidence backing it.

“Mwengi Mutuse,is this impeachment motion really and truly your motion? On all accounts, the witness is unable to prove anything. Is this your motion and then defend it here?” Questioned Wambua.

The impeachment motion against Gachagua, which cited multiple accusations including corruption and misconduct, was filed by Mutuse earlier in the month.

The charges focused on Gachagua’s alleged amassing of unexplained wealth and inflammatory public statements, with over 291 MPs supporting the motion in the National Assembly.

However, during the Senate hearings, where the Deputy President defended himself, many senators questioned the sufficiency of evidence presented to support these accusations, leading to Wambua’s critical line of questioning.

Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu also questioned the allegations of Mutuse against Gachagua stating that it is not impartial.

He slammed the evidence of the Kibwezi West MP noting that his argument is not logical.

“Mr Speaker, who drafted this particular motion for Honourable Mutuse? In my view, he does not give convincing reasons because every time he is asked a question, he says, ‘I think so,’ or ‘I believe so.’ He has listed several companies, and upon cross-examination, he has repeatedly said he has no problem with the companies, and upon cross-examination, he has repeatedly said he has no problem with the companies, apart from stating tht he thought there was an intention to use them for money laundering,” stated Senator Nyutu.

The session marked a crucial phase in the ongoing political drama as the Senate debated whether the charges warranted Gachagua’s removal from office.

Mwengi tabled the motion to the National Assembly to impeach Gachagua over 11 counts.

However, the Deputy President denied the allegations laid against him.

Gachagua’s counsel team appeared before the Senate alongside DP to defend him.
