President William Ruto reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to bolstering Kenya’s agricultural sector during the 10th Annual Baringo Cultural Festival and Kimalel Goat Auction held on December 17, 2024, in Baringo County.
Addressing attendees, he highlighted initiatives aimed at enhancing farmers’ productivity, increasing earnings, and ensuring food security.
Advancements in Agricultural Productivity
President Ruto emphasized the government’s dedication to supporting farmers in sustaining recent gains in agricultural productivity.
He noted that these improvements have led to increased earnings for farmers and strengthened the nation’s food security.
The President underscored the importance of continuous support to maintain and build upon these achievements.
Nationwide Livestock Vaccination Programme
In a significant policy announcement, President Ruto unveiled plans for a comprehensive livestock vaccination programme set to commence in January 2025.
The initiative aims to vaccinate approximately 22 million cattle and 50 million sheep and goats against prevalent diseases, aligning with global standards to reduce disease prevalence and enhance the quality of livestock products for international markets.
The President assured that locally produced vaccines would be utilized, reinforcing the safety and efficacy of the programme.
Addressing Concerns and Ensuring Success
Despite concerns raised by the Kenya Veterinary Association (KVA) regarding the rapid implementation of the vaccination programme, President Ruto defended the initiative’s timeline.
The KVA had called for a postponement to allow for adequate public sensitization, warning that a rushed rollout without proper engagement could lead to failure and reinforce suspicions about fund misuse.
In response, the President emphasized the programme’s critical role in increasing livestock yields and controlling diseases, dismissing detractors’ propaganda and misinformation.
Kimalel Goat Auction: A Cultural and Economic Highlight
The Kimalel Goat Auction, an annual event in Baringo County, serves as a significant cultural and economic occasion.
This year’s auction featured the sale of close to 4,000 goats, with President Ruto officiating the proceedings.
The event also showcased the rich cultural heritage of the region, including traditional dances and performances, attracting visitors and buyers from across the country.
Digital Innovations and Future Prospects
In a bid to modernize the auction process and expand its reach, this year’s event introduced digital platforms, enabling Kenyans in the diaspora to participate in the auction online.
The E-Farmer platform facilitated online purchases, empowering a broader audience to engage in this cultural and economic activity.
Additionally, the event featured the unveiling of a KSh141 million slaughterhouse in Mogotio Sub-county, funded by the European Union.
The facility aims to benefit over 400,000 livestock farmers and traders, enhancing the region’s meat processing capabilities.
President Ruto’s participation in the Kimalel Goat Auction underscores the government’s commitment to supporting agricultural initiatives that boost farmers’ incomes and promote food security.
The forthcoming livestock vaccination programme represents a strategic effort to align Kenya’s livestock sector with international standards, opening up new opportunities for farmers in global markets.
