Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed deep concern over what he describes as rising levels of political intolerance and repression in Kenya.
Gachagua’s remarks follow the brutal murder of Richard Raymond Otieno, popularly known as “Molo President,” a prominent human rights defender and community leader from Molo.
Speaking on the matter, Gachagua described the murder as a chilling attempt to instill fear among Kenyans, particularly government critics.
“The gruesome and brutal murder of Richard Raymond Otieno is a clear testimony of another strategy to infuse fear among Kenyans in a pathetic and archaic attempt to silence government critics after failed abductions,” Gachagua said.
The former deputy president questioned how a nation like Kenya could deteriorate to what he termed as the “trenches of a failed state” where citizens, including children and women, are increasingly unsafe.
Raymond Otieno, widely respected for his advocacy for human rights and community development, was killed over the weekend in an incident that has sent shockwaves across the country.
His murder has sparked outrage among activists, political leaders, and citizens alike, who are demanding justice.
Gachagua extended his condolences to Otieno’s family and the people of Molo, stating, “To the family of Raymond Otieno and the people of Molo, I share in your pain and grief. My deepest sympathies to you all.”
He also called for urgent action from the Kenyan government, emphasizing that those responsible for Otieno’s murder must be held accountable.
“As we mourn the death of this promising young man, who was a great human rights defender and champion, we call for justice. His killers must be brought to book come what may. The Government of Kenya cannot afford to sit on the fence on this matter,” he asserted.
Otieno’s death highlights the growing dangers faced by human rights defenders and critics of the government in Kenya.
Activists and civil society organizations have repeatedly raised concerns over increasing incidents of threats, abductions, and targeted violence against vocal individuals.
Gachagua’s strong condemnation underscores the urgency for authorities to address these issues and restore public confidence in the rule of law.
As calls for justice grow louder, the nation waits to see whether decisive action will be taken to ensure the safety of citizens and accountability for those who seek to silence dissent.
Raymond Otieno is remembered for his courage, dedication, and unwavering commitment to justice. May his soul rest in peace, and may his family find comfort during this difficult time.
