President William Ruto arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to attend the Second United Nations Food Systems Summit Stock take.
Upon his arrival at Bole International Airport, President Ruto was received by Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Temesgen Tiruneh.
During the summit, the Head of State is also supposed to read Kenya’s national statement, emphasizing the country’s unflinching commitment towards rebranding food systems to promote sustainable development and enhance climate resilience.
In a statement on his official X page, President Ruto stated that he had hosted Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali at the National Palace before the global forum. In their discussions, the long-standing, friendly relations between Kenya and Ethiopia were highlighted, underpinned by respect for one another, intense diplomatic engagement, and a spirit of good neighborliness.
“Firm and enduring such partnership has promoted regional stability and heightened cooperation in the Horn of Africa,” declared President Ruto.
Bilateral relations between the two nations, he further added, are underpinned by the 2012 Special Status Agreement. The agreement constitutes a whole package for seeking cooperation in key areas such as development of infrastructure, energy, trade, investment, and regional integration.
Besides his summit engagements, President Ruto will also attend several high-level bilateral sessions with global leaders. Among them is Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, and other heads of state and government attending the summit.
The UN Food Systems Summit is a critical forum that nations utilize to take stock and re-affirm commitment towards building strong, sustainable, and inclusive food systems. Kenya’s participation demonstrates its strategic role in driving food security, climate resilience, and regional agriculture cooperation and related sectors.
