In a recent meeting with leaders from the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), President William Ruto expressed commitment to addressing teacher welfare and improving educational standards for Kenyan students.

The discussion, held at State House Nairobi, included KUPPET National Chairman Omboko Milemba, who outlined critical concerns affecting teachers, particularly the unresolved payment issues and limited promotion opportunities under the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between KUPPET and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC].

KUPPET has been pressing the government to release the pending payments, noting that teachers in certain job groups, such as D5, could see substantial salary increases if their recommendations are implemented.

Additionally, Milemba advocated for a comprehensive audit of the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) to eliminate funding for “ghost learners” — an inefficiency that, he argues, is siphoning funds intended to support actual students and teachers across the nation.

The union also raised concerns over healthcare, urging the government to reinstate the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) as the primary insurance provider for teachers, a role currently filled by AON Minet.

This switch, according to Milemba, would allow teachers and their families to access a broader range of healthcare options.

This meeting underlines President Ruto’s ongoing dialogue with education stakeholders, as he aims to make tangible improvements within the sector.

However, while these discussions are promising, KUPPET has made it clear that without timely action, it may escalate its demands, potentially disrupting the academic calendar as part of a protest over pending issues.
