Eighteen out of the thirty-three suspects believed to be associated with the notorious Barsuliek Karnet gang, accused of extorting traders in Eldoret, were presented in an Eldoret law court yesterday.
They were subsequently released on a bond of 1.2 million shillings. The suspects, apprehended by police officers on Wednesday, are facing charges of robbery with violence, threatening to kill, and creating disturbance.
“The organized Barsuliek Karnet gang has allegedly been involved in various criminal activities including extortion, threats, cyber bullying, assault, and exerting control over strategic business premises in Eldoret for monetary gain,” stated a police spokesperson.
However, shockwaves reverberated through the business community in Eldoret as senior Uasin Gishu County officials, led by the County Attorney, appeared in court on behalf of the suspects. This unexpected intervention has raised eyebrows and stirred controversy.
The suspects were instructed to deposit their national IDs in court as part of the bail conditions. The case is ongoing, with further developments expected in the near future.
