NCCK Leaders from Uasin Gishu County, Led by Outgoing Chairperson Rev. Solomon Chelal, Addressing the Media

The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has observed that The NADCO report, while a notable step forward in addressing national development, regrettably sidestepped the persistent security challenges that continue to plague various arid and semi-arid  (ASAL) regions, particularly the ongoing scourge of banditry in the North Rift area.

Reverend Solomon Chelal, the outgoing chairperson of NCCK Uasin Gishu, underscored the concerns of NCCK leaders in Uasin Gishu regarding the need for a comprehensive assessment before the implementation of the NADCO recommendations.

In a compelling speech, Rev. Chelal articulated the NCCK’s stance on the matter, advocating for robust public participation not only in the scrutiny of the NADCO report but also in any potential constitutional amendments through a referendum.

Of particular concern to the clergy is the potential strain on taxpayers resulting from the creation of additional political offices, a stance adamantly opposed by the NCCK.

Moreover, the clergy emphasizes the need  for the government to explore alternative avenues for implementing the NADCO report, ones that alleviate rather than exacerbate the financial burdens already weighing heavily on Kenyan citizens.

Rev. Simon Kogey who is the NCCK secretary  Uasin Gishu county has further voiced reservations about certain NADCO proposals aimed at amalgamating independent institutions such as the NCIC, and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.

While the NCCK remains largely supportive of the NADCO report, it calls for a comprehensive post-election evaluation to proactively address emerging challenges that could potentially undermine the nation’s hard-won peace and stability that is often threatened after the General Elections .

NCCK has affirmed it’s support for  gender parity and calls for measures to ensure equitable representation and participation of women in all sectors of governance and development.

The clergy’s advocacy underscores the importance of not only addressing immediate concerns but also ensuring that any reforms contribute to the long-term well-being and cohesion of the nation.
