A peaceful protest in Nairobi’s Central Business District demanding the resignation of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat was violently disrupted by a boda boda-riding gang.

The demonstrators, marching from Nation Centre toward Central Police Station, were ambushed at University Way. The gang chased, whipped, and attacked protesters, setting one motorbike ablaze.
Police officers and patrol vehicles at the scene reportedly did not intervene, sparking outrage over alleged complicity.
Earlier, police used teargas to disperse crowds near Nation Centre, but protesters regrouped before the gang’s assault. The chaos forced shops and businesses to close, leaving Nairobi’s streets deserted.
Human rights groups condemned the violence and called for an independent investigation into the gang’s actions and police inaction. No official police statement has clarified the gang’s identity or motives.
Protest organizers vowed to continue despite the attack, citing their constitutional right to peaceful assembly.Nairobi remains tense, with residents fearing further clashes. Calls grow for government action to ensure public safety and uphold the rule of law.
