Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, currently serving as the acting Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, has announced the establishment of 27 new sub-counties in Kenya.

This initiative, aimed at improving citizens’ access to government services and addressing security concerns, was formalized through a gazette notice.

In addition to the new sub-counties, Mudavadi also gazetted 59 divisions, 170 locations, and 322 sub-locations, creating a total of 578 new administrative units nationwide.

These new units are expected to significantly enhance service delivery, particularly in underserved regions.

“We have officially established 578 new administrative units across the country by gazettement,” Mudavadi stated in the notice.“When operational, the 27 Sub-Counties, 59 Divisions, 170 Locations, and 322 Sub-Locations will improve citizens’ access to Government services and effectively address security issues in respective areas.”

The Prime Cabinet Secretary explained that the decision to expand administrative units was necessitated by population growth and the need to adhere to the government’s ministerial 2:1 ratio for efficient service delivery

He cited Section 14(1) of the National Government Coordination Act, 2013, as the legal foundation for the changes.Among the newly created sub-counties are Magarini South, renamed from Magarini, and Magarini North.

Others include Kokane, with its headquarters in Assa; Akachiu; Maua, renamed from Igembe South; and Tharaka West, with its headquarters in Kibung’a.

Mukothima, Ndithini (headquartered at Kiatineni Market), Nuu (Nuu Trading Centre), and Zombe, renamed from Mutitu Sub-County, were also listed.

Further additions include Illeret, Engineer, Soin (headquartered at Kipsitet), and Sigowet, renamed from Soin Sigowet with its headquarters in Chepkemel.

Kolowa, Baringo West (headquartered at Barwesa), Mukutani, Tiaty Central (formerly Tiaty West with its headquarters in Chemolingot), and Samburu West (headquartered at Loosuk) complete the list of new sub-counties.

The reorganization is part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure equitable development and strengthen governance across the country.

It is expected to enhance coordination between local leaders and the national administration, particularly in regions where security challenges are a concern.

By addressing existing gaps in service delivery, these administrative changes aim to foster social and economic development, bringing essential government services closer to citizens and improving their quality of life.
