Murkomen: Boosting Women’s Role in Motorsports
To address the gender gap in motorsports, the government sponsored four all-women crews in the 2023 and 2024 Safari Rallies.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to increasing women’s participation in motorsports, a field where female representation remains low globally.
Speaking after a meeting with Ms. Lisa Christoffersen, the founder of the Chui Racing Team and the Lioness Rally, Murkomen highlighted ongoing and future initiatives to support women in the sport.
To address the gender gap in motorsports, the government sponsored four all-women crews in the 2023 and 2024 Safari Rallies.
This groundbreaking effort not only promoted inclusivity but also showcased women’s capabilities in a highly competitive sport.
“Women’s participation in motorsports is generally low across the world, and we are determined to change that narrative,” said Murkomen.
Ms. Christoffersen, an accomplished rally driver and advocate for women in motorsports, met with the CS to discuss her plans for the 2025 Safari Rally.
She also proposed an innovative partnership with the government to host two major events in Turkana County in May: an all-female rally and a fashion show.
Both events aim to raise funds for charity while inspiring more women to enter the world of motorsports.
“Ms. Christoffersen’s passion and dedication to empowering women through motorsports are truly inspiring,” Murkomen said. “Her vision aligns with our goals of promoting inclusivity and supporting women to excel in all areas, including sports and entrepreneurship.”
The proposed events in Turkana County are expected to create a significant impact. The all-female rally will provide a platform for women drivers to showcase their skills, while the fashion show will celebrate creativity and culture.
Together, the initiatives aim to highlight the diverse talents of Kenyan women and raise funds for charitable causes in the region.
Murkomen expressed his optimism about the collaboration and its potential to inspire the next generation of female drivers.
“Motorsports is a powerful avenue for empowerment, and through these efforts, we hope to break barriers and give women the recognition they deserve in this field,” he said.
The government’s ongoing support for women in motorsports, combined with partnerships like those proposed by Ms. Christoffersen, signals a promising future for gender equality in the sport.
As preparations for the 2025 Safari Rally continue, Kenya’s leadership in promoting inclusivity in motorsports is poised to leave a lasting legacy.
