At the inauguration of the Second Ministerial Meeting of the Taskforce of the School Meals Coalition (SMC), Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi emphasized the critical role the program has played in enhancing food security, particularly in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid regions.

The event, held in conjunction with the World Food Programme (WFP), showcased the Coalition’s efforts to ensure vulnerable children across rural and urban areas have access to nutritious meals.

Mudavadi lauded the SMC initiative, noting its profound impact on improving school enrolment and reducing absenteeism.

“This program holds remarkable potential to uplift lives, especially for vulnerable children across rural and urban communities,” he said.

By addressing the basic need for nutritious meals, the initiative supports both the physical well-being of children and their academic performance.

The importance of such programs in shaping Kenya’s future was a central theme in Mudavadi’s remarks.

He emphasized that improving children’s education through proper nutrition strengthens their capacity to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development. “By empowering them today, we are securing a better tomorrow for our country,” he added.

As part of the government’s long-term vision, Mudavadi reaffirmed a commitment to ensuring that every child in Kenya has access to safe and nutritious meals by 2030.

He pointed out that the collaboration between the government, WFP, and other stakeholders is key to achieving this goal.

“Together, as government and stakeholders, we share the responsibility to turn this vision into reality,” Mudavadi said.

A significant concern for Mudavadi is the protection of children’s education from the negative effects of conflict.

He stressed that fostering a stable and peaceful environment is essential to achieving success in school meal programs.

“As leaders, we are committed to safeguarding our children’s education from the impact of conflict,” he said, underscoring the need for peace and stability as the foundation for progress in education.

The event was also attended by prominent figures, including Cabinet Secretary for Education Julius Migos Ogamba, World Food Programme Executive Director Ms.

Cyndy McCain, and Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson, among other leaders.

The School Meals Coalition, supported by the WFP, continues to play a vital role in alleviating hunger and improving educational outcomes, reinforcing Kenya’s broader efforts toward sustainable development and food security.
